Goodbye 2023, and welcome to 2024. 2023 was an amazing year for Witnet, the multichain decentralized oracle. From the official launch of MyWitWallet on Windows, Android, and iOS to the launch of the Witnet 2.0 roadmap, Witnet is positioning itself to become the first Layer 1 Proof of Stake Oracle network. Starting with the January 2023 Community Call and Monthly Roundup, let’s recap the yearly progress of Witnet.
January 2023 Community Call and Monthly Roundup
January 2023 was a jam-packed month for Witnet. Here’s a brief highlight:
Chain updates
In January, there was no particular chain integration; the focus was to go deeper into each ecosystem, only deploying on a new chain when necessary.
Protocol and data feeds
There was a decrease in total data feeds. However, that was because the focus was on consolidating and researching Witnet’s on-chain usage for future deployments.
Network statistics
The network saw a nice surge in all tracked usages. There were 50,800 data requests, for a total of 1.12 million.
Technical updates
The community was teased about the launch of the lightwallet, which would allow the Witnet community to transfer WIT and hold it directly on mobile, or for another instance of a desktop wallet. Please note that the name has been changed to myWitWallet.
EthereumDenver
Witnet was a proud sponsor of EthDenver. The event was to be held in late February. Witnet worked to develop a new game called “Witty Pixels" to run the entire length of the conference. Before the event, Witnet dubbed the game the largest collaborative NFT creation to date, and it was an amazing opportunity for eventgoers.
AMA with other communities
As highlighted in the January Community Call and Monthly Roundup, there was a planned AMA with the Reef chain team, and the Witnet Developer Relations teammate, otherwise known as Parody_Bit was to represent Witnet.
The beginning of the year was jam-packed, and the subsequent months were no different.
Notable Deployments and Integration:
Witnet secures the Reef protocol:
The Witnet network successfully secured the Reef protocol, a blockchain network built on the Parity substrate. It was a great collaboration because it made it possible for Reef developers to get access to the Witnet tooling, such as price feeds, lending protocols, data feeds like weather or sports via publicly available APIs, and randomness.
Witnet provided price feeds to QuickSwap on the Polygon mainnet:
QuickSwap chose Witnet to be its oracle on Polygon for their protocol. Witnet thrives in trustless ecosystems like lending protocols, so the collaboration further legitimizes the Witnet oracle network and the native $WIT coin as the foundation for decentralized and trustless finance.
With or without the QuickSwap collaboration, Witnet is well-positioned as the foundation layer for a trustless and decentralized future of decentralized finance.
Witnet is the first oracle live on Polygon zkEVM
Witnet is the first Oracle available on Polygon zkEVM. This means developers could leverage true randomness, decentralized and immutable price feeds, and data from any publicly available API.
Witnet secures Pinjam
It was another addition to the protocol using the Witnet oracle for price feeds. For a DeFi protocol to be fully decentralized, it needs to utilize a fully decentralized oracle. Pinjam avoided the headache of common Oracle exploits by using Witnet directly and tapping into its incredibly strong crowd-witnessing ability.
Witnet went live on Elastos, providing secure price feeds to developers
It was a great opportunity for Elastos and Witnet to further impact DeFi, and it added a new use case for the Witnet oracle. It made it possible for developers looking to build, or looking to go beyond DeFi, to create DID and social networking products.
Witnet went live on Fuse, securing on-chain value for its 25th blockchain integration
This integration added more usage to the Witnet oracle while growing new use cases like point of sale. With secure price data on a highly scalable blockchain, people can build projects that can greatly benefit commerce on the internet and in person.
Witnet went live on Mantle
With its ever-growing list of chain integrations, the Witnet Oracle went live on the Mantle chain.
Witnet integrated on Syscoin layer 2 and Rollux
This was another step forward in the partnership with Syscoin, as Witnet was previously integrated into Layer 1. To continue providing decentralized and secure price feeds, Witnet integrated Layer 2 to allow developers the ability to access off-chain data seamlessly.
Witnet: The First Oracle Protocol On Scroll Mainnet
The launch of Witnet on Scroll Mainnet was a significant turning point in blockchain history. It enabled developers and projects to build dApps that can securely access and interact with real-world data in a decentralized and trustless way.
All these integrations and deployments add to the legitimacy of Witnet as a true innovation in distributed computing. Witnet is securing hundreds of millions in on-chain value with 300+ data feeds on 28+ chains.
Notable Highlights of 2023:
Exchange Listing
The Witnet $WIT coin was listed on new exchange services, offering more liquidity, trading volume, and access to the $WIT coin
The $WIT token was listed on:
1. Bitmart
2. Changelly
3. SimpleSwap
4. LetsExchange
The Witnet explorer: version 1.4
The release of Witnet Explorer version 1.4 was packed with new features and some bug fixes.
Monitoring the explorer’s performance
The ability to monitor resource usage and performance was added. To achieve this, the repository included a Prometheus and Grafana dashboard that visualizes useful metrics from all backend components.
Network usage visualizations
The network page was extended with several different graphs visualizing several key network metrics.
These are just a few highlights and features that were added; please refer to this article for further details: https://medium.com/witnet/the-witnet-explorer-version-1-4-d2c7be33c94
myWitWallet
myWitWallet, the Ultimate Non-Custodial Witnet Wallet, was officially released on Windows, Android, and iOS.
Witnet Advocate Program, Season 3
After two successful seasons of the Witnet Advocate program, season 3 had a renewed focus on allowing anyone to participate and help grow the Witnet community, especially in advance of the launch of Witnet 2.0. The program was a success, and the team teased the launch of the Witnet Advocate Program, Season 4, shortly.
Witnet Network hits 2,000,000 blocks
Witnet was happy to announce that the Witnet network independently created 2,000,000 blocks! This was a huge milestone for truly decentralized, permissionless protocols, and Witnet is honoured to lead the charge.
Witnet Cross-Chain Data Requests
The new tool in the Witnet suite of products unleashes the ability to link together multiple smart contracts deployed on different blockchains, leveraged by the versatility and power of the Witnet Oracle. This marks a big step in decentralized data input for blockchain oracle services like Witnet, as it opens the door for a massive amount of innovation in the next few years as people onboard new users with new use cases.
Witnet Oracle Comparison Series
The Witnet Oracle Comparison Series was launched to see how Witnet compared to other oracles like Chainlink, Band, Tellor, API3, Redstone, and many more. The comparison series allowed the community to see the massive potential of Witnet in comparison with other projects.
Witnet 2.0 Official Roadmap
This was a big achievement for 2023, as it positions Witnet to become the first Layer 1 Proof of Stake Oracle network. Though the Witnet 2.0 roadmap was slightly adjusted as discussed in the Witnet December community call, Witnet 2.0 is still on course and will change the way we view decentralized oracles like Witnet.
Goodbye 2023, and hello 2024. Witnet is ready to conquer uncharted territories in decentralized oracles in 2024. Stay tuned for official updates.
